Børge Mogensen was one of Danish design's most influential designers, always inspired by everyday functionality, traditional carpentry techniques and a progressive vision of the possibilities in furniture architecture. The 'Tremmesofa' is a unique example of this, with its revolutionary design too sophisticated for the austere tastes of the post-war era. The sofa was first presented in an exhibition at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Furniture Exhibition in 1945. Here, Børge Mogensen and his close friend Hans J. Wegner put together a vision for the apartment of the future, with both the 'Tremmesofaen' and the '1788 Stolen' as the focal points of the exhibition.
The iconic piece has achieved its status on the basis of its groundbreaking design, which elegantly combines the ideas behind the English daybed and the French chaise longue. Børge Mogensen recreated the comfort of this furniture in a flexible armrest that could be adjusted in angle via characteristic leather straps that matched the colour of the individual piece of furniture. This opened up a whole new dimension of flexible comfort, which has become one of the popular designer's core values. The functionality of the furniture was combined with a traditional Danish design that, characteristic of Mogensen's design, embraces the wood as the supporting material of the furniture. The visual wooden frame creates the frame around the elegant cushions which are complimented with buttons that give the cushion extra volume. The sofa is available in the iconic Cotil textile, which with its characteristic checks and traditional colours helps to maintain the original spirit of the furniture, matching the treated wood perfectly.
The 'Three Seater' sofa is available in a black range of fabrics, leather types and colours as well as wood finishes. If you would like to design your own 'Tremmesofa', please feel free to contact us by email or phone.
