The book's author is American architect Michael Sheridan. In his tribute to Danish architecture 1950-1962, he describes how Danish architects' ideas about the single-family house combined modern architectural influences from the United States and Japan with the best of Danish building practice - creating an architectural golden age in Denmark.
Iconic single-family houses were designed in the 1950s by architects such as Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen, Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert, Hanne Kjærholm, Erik Christian Sørensen and Halldor Gunnløgsson.
These Danish houses are unique interpretations of the possibilities of modern architecture. In preparing the book, Michael Sheridan visited more than half a hundred single-family houses and selected 14 of them, all dating from between 1950 and 1962 and still intact.
'Masterpieces' opens with a major, thought-provoking essay on the development of the modern house in Denmark from 1920 to 1975, illustrated with more than 150 contemporary photographs. In addition, the 14 houses selected by Sheridan have been newly photographed in colour, especially for the book. Masterpieces concludes with biographies of the 11 leading architects who designed the houses.
