DINING TABLE LAMPS
A GUIDE TO LIGHTING THE HEART OF YOUR HOME

For many, the dining room is the heart of the home.
It is no longer a space exclusively for sharing dining experiences, but the dining room has also become the place where we work, hold conversations and read our newspaper. Therefore, the appropriate lighting is a necessity to create the ideal environment and the right atmosphere in the heart of the home.

The right lamp for your dining room

Light has endless functions and it can be a challenge to find the right type of lamp that suits the room, the size of the dining table and the function of the lamp.

In open and bright rooms, the most important function of the light is to create an atmosphere. Lamps with opal glass can provide a soft and diffused light that adds a sense of warmth to the room, while a 360 degree pendant will illuminate the whole room.
Spacious bright rooms also offer the opportunity to experiment with larger lamps that play with the qualities of light and can cast beautiful shadows across the room.

In a darker, smaller room, the main function of the lamp is to illuminate the room and provide a focused light above the table.
Here, an open pendant is the perfect choice, as it both illuminates the ceiling above the dining table and provides a centred light directly on the table. A closed pendant, on the other hand, will only provide a focused light over the table, perfect for reading and writing at.

A guide to mounting your lamps

Regardless of which lamp you choose to adorn your dining room with, how you mount your lamp is crucial. The goal is an even light that doesn't block your view, is hanging too far apart or has the wrong proportions.
First, decide how big your lamp should be in relation to the size of your dining table and whether you need one, two or more light sources.

» A typical distance of 80 centimetres is used when hanging several pendants above a dining table.
» For larger pendants, a distance of 60-75 centimetres between the lamp and the table would be ideal, to avoid taking up too much of the view.
» Smaller pendants need a distance of 55-65 centimetres from the table top.

Mounting your dining table lamps is often an experimental process and it is therefore a good idea to try out several heights before mounting the lamp. At the same time, different heights and distances can also give the lamps an even more interesting and playful look, which might suit your personal decor better.

Inspiration for dining table lamps

The classic dining table lamp

The Danish design heritage has a large selection of iconic pendants by great Danish designers. Lamps that have illuminated private homes and official buildings for decades.
The classic lamps are characterised by their timeless design and their importance to the history of Danish design - and they are always a safe choice when it comes to quality.

At ByFlou we are particularly passionate about classics such as Verner Panton's Flowerpot with its retro look and Jørn Utzon's Utzon lamp in exclusive metals. But we also strive to make room for new classics such as Fritz Hansen's Clam which in 2019 secured the new design duo, Ahm & Lund, a victory in the television show 'Denmark's Next Classic'.

The experimental dining table lamp

For many lamp designers, creativity is key when creating new lighting options. They experiment with playful shapes, the qualities of materials and how light can be manipulated.

Lamps like these often have a bold, eye-catching design and become a statement piece in the interior, with an equally decorative function.

The Nordic dining table lamp

An ever-popular form of design is the Nordic white lamp. Any brand with a passion for lighting has its own version of the stylish white lamp and the options in shape and material are endless.

At ByFlou, we are nevertheless aware that a lamp should be able to last a lifetime and our range reflects this mindset. With us you will find a stylish and quality-conscious alternative to cheap white lamps from, for example, IKEA or ILVA.

Our lamp range explores materials such as rice paper, opal glass and aluminium, which all reflect the Nordic white look.

The minimalistic dining table lamp

Sometimes a home requires a more discreet form of lighting. This is either to maintain a minimalist decor, or to compliment an extravagant decor.

Characteristic of the truly minimalist lamps is the discreet and sophisticated design, where the lamp's primary purpose is to illuminate the space. However, designers rarely compromise the exclusive look of the lamps, using materials such as brass, copper and opal glass.

Many of the minimalistic lamps use LED light sources to maintain the minimalist look and create the ideal light above the dining table.
