The 'Corona' chair, designed by Poul M. Volther, is one of the defining pieces of Nordic furniture architecture, challenging conventional armchair requirements, playing with visual dimensions and still embracing functionalism. The chair's revolutionary design - as it was back in 1964 - achieved its iconic status both nationally but also on an international scale, taking its place in some of the world's most luxurious hotels, in music videos and in the home of every furniture enthusiast. Volther worked closely with some of Denmark's greatest designers, such as Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen, who shared a vision of functionality, quality and comfort above all else. What was unique about Poul M. Volther, however, was his sense of sculptural design and modern aesthetics, which is clearly reflected in 'Corona' and which has become a classic over time, despite its controversial design. The idea behind the chair's characteristic elliptical shapes stems from the textile shortage after WWII. World War II. Here, splitting the backrest became an ideal solution for less textile use.
'Corona' invites an experimental approach to geometry, with its signature figure - the ellipse. The four geometric shapes together form the backrest and seat, which lightly embrace the body with their slightly swaying form. A raw brushed steel frame with elegant kinks, creates a flexible back for the chair, allowing the viewer to explore the entire construction of the chair in one.
'Corona Chair' is available in a wide range of fabrics and leathers in different colours. If you would like to design your own 'Corona' chair, please feel free to contact us by email or phone.
