Stool from New WorksAtlas Stool
Introducing the Atlas Stool from New Works, a masterpiece created by renowned designer John Astbury in 2023. This solid oak stool is a tribute to the mythical Titan, Atlas, who carried the weight of the heavens on his shoulders. Like its namesake, the Atlas Stool stands firm, with its sturdy legs caressing the elegantly rounded seat. In its design, there is a fascinating interplay between form and function, with each element reinforcing the other, giving the stool a distinct presence and a touch of brutalist elegance.
Taking inspiration from architectural landmarks throughout the ages, this stool subtly references porticos and colonnades. Yet its core essence lies in the timeless post-and-lintel construction, consisting of upright supports and horizontal beams. When paired with simple geometric shapes - circle and square - it is these basic archetypes that harmoniously shape the composition and character of the stool.
The stool transcends its role as a mere seat; it becomes a versatile piece of functional art that can also serve as a side table. This sculptural piece of art enriches any space it graces, either as a standalone object or as part of a larger design ensemble.
