'The Spanish Chair', designed by the popular Børge Mogensen, is synonymous with Danish design and easily takes its place as one of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of Danish furniture architecture. Its unique character has achieved an international status, blending in with some of the largest and most luxurious homes in the world and helping to put Børge Mogensen, and not least Danish design, on the world map.
The chair was first introduced to the public at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Furniture Exhibition in 1950, where it was part of a collection called 'The Hunting Lodge'. The furniture here was the first in which Mogensen experimented with the combination of a sturdy wooden frame and stretched core leather, inspired by traditional Spanish Moorish chairs. He combined this Spanish traditionalism with his own Danish design, influenced by functionalism, which led to a reworking of the chair's proportions and the resulting 'Spanish Chair'.
The chair is constructed with a sturdy wooden frame in solid wood, which with its low height helps to ensure the beloved lounge feeling that the chair possesses. The wide armrests add both comfort but also an extra dimension of functionalism, as they are ideal as a side table, for a cup or book. This detail makes the chair a piece of furniture that can stand alone in a room and open up a more informal conversational environment. The seat and backrest are crafted in heavy core leather, buckled up by visible brass buckles, allowing the viewer to observe the entire construction of the piece of furniture, without hiding the extraordinary details.
The Spanish Chair is made of the finest materials, from the quartered oak wood to the brass buckles and the vegetable-tanned leather, which is still tanned today using traditional processes in northern Sweden. This focus on the quality of the materials helps to ensure a piece of furniture that can be loved for decades, and over the years acquires a personal patina that adds character and personality to each piece of furniture.
'The Spanish Chair' is available in several variations of wood lacquers and leather types, which can be combined to your liking. If you would like to design your own piece of furniture, please feel free to contact us by email or phone.
- Base in lacquered, oiled, soaped or smoked oak. Interchangeable seat and back in vegetable tanned leather with metal buckles.
- The metal buckles can be tightened as the leather expands over time.
- When cleaning oiled wood, a mild solution of soap flakes or a cleaner for oil-treated wood surfaces is recommended. New oil must then be added to prevent the wood from drying out.
- For cleaning varnished wood, a mild solution of soap flakes or all-purpose cleaner is recommended. Then polish with a dry soft cloth. Never leave liquids on lacquered wood surfaces as this may cause the lacquer to delaminate.
- When cleaning soaped and untreated a soft cloth, heavily wrung in a mild solution of soap flakes. Always wipe in the grain direction of the wood. Never use water on untreated wood surfaces if it can be avoided.
- Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth, or a soft cloth heavily wrung in cold clean water. For vegetable tanned leather, use demineralised or boiled and cooled water. If a wrung-out cloth is used, entire surfaces should always be covered to avoid staining. Then polish with a dry soft cloth. As far as possible, avoid placing leather furniture in direct sunlight.
- Original design by Børge Mogensen, produced by Fredericia Furniture (1958)
