Børge Mogensen's 'BM86' Dining Table, first designed in 1964, was one of Mogensen's growing portfolio of unique and functional tables that over time became timeless classics both nationally and internationally. Mogensen's tables were all strongly characterised by his design philosophy of furniture functionality, construction transparency and exquisite quality in terms of good materials. The tables were also influenced by the Shaker movement's 'form-follow-function' principle and their innovative methods of carpentry. Both Børge Mogensen himself and his colleague Hans J. Wegner were among the Danish designers who helped to bridge the gap between Shaker design and Scandinavian minimalism, and Mogensen's table is thus also known as the 'Shaker table'.
'BM86' is designed for everyday people and their lives, which is clearly reflected in the table's construction and design. Simple lines characterise the design, with rounded edges for a soft look. The base is formed in two slender table legs that come together in a foot at the end, which is both practical as it avoids redundant table legs, but also a beautiful solution that is visually impressive. Finishing details such as brass fittings and milled arches give the table a final finesse that doesn't overpower the furniture's understated and sober design.
- Finished in soap-treated, light oiled or smoked oiled oak with brass fittings.
- Optional additional tops.
- When cleaning soaped and untreated, use a soft cloth, heavily wrung in a mild solution of soap flakes. Always wipe in the grain direction of the wood. Never use water on untreated wood surfaces if it can be avoided.
- When cleaning oiled wood, a mild solution of soap flakes or a cleaner for oil-treated wood surfaces is recommended. New oil must then be added to prevent the wood from drying out.
- Weight: 56 kg
- Original design by Børge Mogensen, produced by Fredericia Furniture (1964)
